Get your free estimateViking Hinge & Roller Replacement: The Austin Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Viking-compatible hinge and roller kits across Austin, with most complete replacements running $240 to $480 installed depending on gate weight and how many hinges have failed. Most jobs are done same day because we keep Viking-spec rollers, hinge plates, and hardware on the truck. The way owners usually find us: the gate starts dragging on one corner, makes a grinding sound when it swings, or the whole leaf sags enough that the latch no longer lines up. If that sounds familiar, the hinge pins or the rollers inside the gate track have likely worn past the point of adjustment.

Which Viking Models This Applies To
Viking gate openers sit on top of two very different gate styles, and the hinge and roller situation is different for each. Swing gates use Viking’s heavy-gauge steel hinges with greasable pins, commonly found on the G-5, R-6, and T-21 residential and light-commercial lines. Slide gates, including the Viking L-3 and S-4 cantilever models, run on steel rollers that ride a tubular track. The compatibility gotcha we see constantly in Austin: Viking slide gates use a 4-inch roller with a sealed bearing, not the universal 3-inch rollers sold at big-box stores. Installing the wrong roller diameter changes the gate’s ride height and throws off the opener’s limit settings. For hinge replacements, measure the leaf height and count the hinge barrels before you order anything. If you’re not sure what you’ve got, call us and describe the gate, or text a photo. We’ll match it correctly the first time.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Viking’s factory hinges are solid, but aftermarket equivalents in powder-coated steel often outlast the originals in Central Texas heat, especially on south-facing gates that bake all afternoon. For rollers, we use sealed-bearing units from established manufacturers rather than no-name imports, because a seized roller on a Viking slide gate takes the opener’s drive chain with it. Calder Gate Repair Austin is an independent service provider and not affiliated with Viking, which means we’re free to stock the best available part for your gate rather than whatever the factory catalog dictates.

Signs Your Viking Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- Gate sags visibly on the latch side. Worn hinge pins allow the gate leaf to drop, and the latch post no longer lines up with the receiver. The hinges aren’t just noisy at this point, they’re bending under load.
- Grinding or screeching when the gate moves. This is usually the roller bearing on a slide gate or a dry, worn hinge pin on a swing gate. In Austin’s dry summers, the dust accelerates wear once the grease is gone.
- Gate jerks or shudders mid-travel. A flat-spotted or partially seized roller causes the gate to catch intermittently, which puts uneven strain on the Viking opener’s gearbox.
- Opener trips its safety or overload sensor repeatedly. The Viking control board senses resistance when the gate’s hardware is binding. The board isn’t the problem, the worn hinge or roller underneath is.
- Metal shavings or rust dust below the hinge or roller. That’s the sound of steel grinding away. By the time you see debris, the part is beyond adjustment and needs replacement.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Complete Viking hinge replacement on a standard residential swing gate in Austin typically runs $240 to $340, including both hinge plates, pins, all mounting hardware, and labor. Roller replacement on a Viking slide gate runs $180 to $300 for a set of two or four rollers, depending on whether the gate needs to be lifted off its track. If the gate frame itself has cracked at the hinge mount, which we see on older Austin installations where the original weld was thin, add $80 to $150 for reinforcement plate work. Every quote is written before we start, and the price on the invoice is the price agreed at the door, no percentage added for surprises. The work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the replacement fails within a year, we return at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
A swing gate hinge replacement on a Viking gate is not a casual weekend project. The gate leaf weighs several hundred pounds, and when the last hinge bolt comes out, that weight has to be supported. Pinched fingers are the best case. A dropped gate that bends the frame or lands on someone is the worst. What you can safely do is identify the problem: lift the latch end of the gate and feel for play at the hinge barrels, or look for a flat spot on the rollers by running your hand over them with the gate in manual release. If you’re certain which part has failed, call us with the model number or a photo and we’ll confirm the right replacement. If you’d rather skip the crawling around, we’ll diagnose it on site. Call (903) 354-7419 and tell us what it’s doing wrong, we’ll tell you exactly what it costs to fix it.
FAQs
In Austin’s heat and occasional freeze cycles, factory Viking hinges last 7 to 10 years, and slide gate rollers last 5 to 8 years before the sealed bearings dry out and start to grind. Gates that are used 20 or more cycles a day, or south-facing gates that sit in direct sun, wear out on the shorter end of that range. Call (903) 354-7419 if you’re near the end of that window and want us to check the wear before it becomes an emergency.
If the hinge body is intact and only the pin is worn, we can replace the pin and ream the barrel, which costs less than a full hinge replacement. But if the barrel is egged out or the hinge plate has pulled away from the gate frame, a new hinge is the only fix that will last. We’ll show you the wear before we recommend which way to go.
Most swing gate hinge replacements are done in 2 to 3 hours. Slide gate roller replacement, including lifting the gate and resetting the track alignment, takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Both are typically completed same day when we arrive with the right parts on the truck.
We stock Viking-spec 4-inch sealed-bearing rollers, greasable hinge pins, and powder-coated steel hinge plates on the truck for the most common Viking residential models, along with compatible parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates. If your gate needs a non-standard size, we can typically source it within two business days. Call (903) 354-7419 and we’ll confirm what’s on hand before we schedule.
If your Viking gate is sagging, grinding, or tripping its own safety sensors, call Calder Gate Repair Austin at (903) 354-7419 for a free estimate. We’ll quote the hinge or roller replacement in writing before any work starts, and back it with the 365-Day Done Right Promise.
