DoorKing welding and fabrication work in Austin typically runs $275 – $750 installed, depending on whether we’re repairing a cracked gate frame, rebuilding a hinge mount, or fabricating a custom bracket for an opener arm. Most jobs are done same-day or next-day because we stock the steel, the welder, and the DoorKing-specific hardware on our trucks. You’ll usually discover the problem the hard way: the gate starts sagging, dragging on the concrete, or the opener grinds against a mount that’s finally given out after years of Central Texas heat and clay-soil shifting.

We’re Calder Gate Repair Austin, and we’re an independent gate repair specialist. We’re not affiliated with DoorKing directly, but we work on their equipment every week. If you have a DoorKing opener mounted to a gate that’s cracked, twisted, or pulling away from its post, this page will tell you exactly what you’re dealing with and what it costs to make it right.
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
Most DoorKing welding and fabrication calls we run in Austin involve the gate itself rather than the opener’s internal electronics. That means the work applies to virtually every DoorKing line you’re likely to own: the 9150 and 9100 slide gate operators, the 6002 and 6003 swing gate arms, and even older models like the 1601 and 8050 series. The opener model matters less than the gate’s construction and what’s attached to it.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: DoorKing swing arms bolt to a mounting plate that has to sit perfectly level, or the arm binds and burns out the motor. If your gate post has shifted in Austin’s expansive clay soil (it happens a lot in East Austin and Mueller, where the ground swells and contracts with every drought-to-rain cycle), the arm’s geometry is now wrong. You can replace the opener three times and it’ll keep failing until someone cuts the old bracket off and welds a new one at the correct angle. That’s fabrication work, not just parts swapping.
For OEM versus aftermarket: DoorKing’s own replacement brackets and gate hardware are good, but we frequently fabricate equivalents in-house from heavier-gauge steel, especially for gates that have already failed once. A properly welded custom bracket often outlasts the factory piece because it’s sized to your specific gate weight and post condition, not a one-size-fits-all spec.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- Gate sags toward the latch side. The hinge welds or the post itself has started to fatigue. You’ll see the gate scrape concrete on one side and a bigger gap at the top. This is the most common call we get in South Austin neighborhoods with older steel gates.
- Opener arm sounds like it’s working too hard. When a swing gate bracket bends or a slide gate chain mount pulls loose, the motor doesn’t know. It just pushes harder. You’ll hear a groan or a metallic rattle that wasn’t there before, and eventually the arm will snap or the chain will jump the sprocket.
- Weld cracks visible at hinge or bracket points. Hairline rust lines radiating from a weld are early fracture signs. Once moisture seeps in, Austin’s humidity and the thermal expansion of our 100-degree summers finish the job fast.
- Gate jerks or stutters mid-travel. A broken or shifting weld creates resistance the opener isn’t programmed for. The gate may pause, reverse, or trip the entrapment protection. That’s not a settings issue, it’s mechanical binding.
- Rust flakes and orange streaks at connection points. This means the weld has already begun to separate internally. By the time you see orange streaks on a gate near Lake Travis or along the Barton Creek greenbelt, the metal underneath has lost structural integrity.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most DoorKing welding and fabrication repairs in Austin fall between $275 and $750. Here’s what drives the range. A simple hinge weld repair or bracket reinforcement runs $275 – $400, including grinding, welding, and rust treatment. Fabricating and installing a custom opener arm bracket runs $400 – $600. Full gate frame repair, where we cut out a rotted or cracked section and weld in new steel, runs $500 – $750.
Parts and labor are itemized separately on your quote. You’ll see the steel cost, the hardware cost, and the labor rate before we ever strike an arc. If we’re doing a straight part swap, the part price is the part price. If we’re fabricating something custom, you’ll get the measurements, material thickness, and a sketch or photo before we cut.
Every welding and fabrication job we do carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the weld fails or the bracket breaks within 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s not a verbal promise. It’s written on every invoice.
As Nico Alvarez says around the shop: “Tell me what it’s doing wrong – I’ll tell you exactly what it costs to fix it.” No surprises, no add-ons at the door. The number we quote is the number you pay.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself. Look at the gate while it moves and see if the motion looks uneven. Inspect visible welds for cracks or rust streaks. Check whether the gate scrapes the ground or leans. Photograph everything and note what you see. That helps us quote accurately over the phone.
What you shouldn’t do is fire up a welder if you’re not experienced. Welding on a gate that’s under tension, or working near an opener with loaded springs and live 115V or 220V wiring, can go badly wrong fast. A gate is a heavy, moving object. If a weld you make fails while the opener is pulling, that’s hundreds of pounds of steel swinging uncontrolled. And welding near DoorKing’s electronics without disconnecting and shielding them properly can fry a control board, which turns a $300 repair into a $1,500 opener replacement.
If any of this sounds outside your comfort zone, call us at (903) 354-7419. We’ll give you a straight answer and a written price before any work starts. If it’s an emergency and the gate won’t close, we answer live 24/7.
FAQs
A properly welded and rust-treated repair on a DoorKing gate typically lasts 10 to 15 years in Central Texas, but that assumes the post itself is still solid. If the post is failing, welding the gate won’t help because the ground movement in Austin’s clay soil will re-crack the weld within a season or two. We always check post integrity before recommending a weld repair.
In most cases, yes. We cut out the cracked or rotted section, weld in a new steel plate or tube sized to match, grind the joint smooth, and treat it for rust. If the gate has multiple cracks or the bottom rail is rusted through in more than one spot, a partial replacement section may make more sense financially. We’ll show you both options with prices before you decide. Call (903) 354-7419 and we’ll walk you through what we’d do.
Most repairs take two to four hours on site. Larger fabrication jobs, like rebuilding a slide gate frame or fabricating a custom post mount, can take a full day. We’ll give you a firm time estimate when we quote the job, and you’ll see a live arrival time on the day of service through the Relay Standard tracking link.
We carry common steel stock, hinge weldments, bracket plates, and DoorKing-compatible hardware on our trucks. For unusual custom fabrications, we may need a day to source specific material or match a profile. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls openers, so if the welding job uncovers an opener issue too, we can often address it on the same visit.
If your DoorKing gate is sagging, cracked, or pulling away from its post, call us at (903) 354-7419. We’ll answer live, ask a few questions about what you’re seeing, and give you a free estimate over the phone. If the job needs eyes on it, we’ll schedule a visit and you’ll get a written price before any welding begins.
