We stock and install Elite-compatible keypad and intercom repair parts across Austin, with most keypad swaps running $185 – $325 installed and intercom module replacements landing between $240 – $410 depending on the model. Same-day service is available when we have your part on the truck, which is most weekdays. The usual first sign is a keypad that works intermittently, then starts eating codes or going completely dark after a hard rain or a Texas sun stretch.

Keypads and intercoms fail differently than motors or actuators. The motor gives you noise and grinding. The keypad just quietly stops recognizing you. One day you punch in your code and nothing happens. Or the intercom speaker crackles, fades, and then you’re stuck buzzing people in from the house while your phone rings off the hook. In Austin’s heat, we see the membrane buttons on older Elite panels crack and peel after three to five summers. The circuit boards behind them corrode from humidity and ant intrusion. It’s rarely the wiring. It’s the component sitting out in the weather doing its best.
Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite gate operators cover a broad range, and their keypad and intercom systems split into two rough generations. The older SL series (SL-1000, SL-2000, SL-3000) ran on hardwired keypads and analog doorbell-style intercoms, many of which are still alive in Austin’s older subdivisions. The newer MiMo and Vertex lines use addressable digital keypads, phone-line or cellular intercom modules, and weather-sealed membranes that tolerate more heat but have their own failure points with the ribbon connectors. Before you order anything, check the model sticker inside the keypad housing or on the intercom board. The model number is almost always there, and it saves you from buying a part that doesn’t talk to your board.
OEM Elite parts are well-made but can take a week or more to arrive and carry a premium price. For most Austin homeowners, a quality aftermarket equivalent with the same connector type and voltage spec works the same and costs 30 – 40% less, which we’ll usually recommend unless the system is still under factory warranty. The one thing we never recommend is a “universal” keypad wired into an Elite system without confirming the output protocol. We’ve been called out twice this year to fix mismatches like that, and both times the fix cost more than doing it right the first time.

Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Codes work sometimes, not others. This is usually a failing membrane or moisture creeping into the keypad housing. The control board sees a weak or ghost signal, so it ignores some entries and accepts others.
- You can hear the relay click, but the gate doesn’t move. That points to a dead keypad-to-board communication line or a worn relay on the keypad circuit, not a bad motor. We test the keypad output directly before condemning the operator.
- Intercom audio is distorted or one-directional. Weatherized speakers degrade fast in Austin’s heat and humidity. You might hear the person at the gate fine, but they can’t hear you, or everything sounds like it’s underwater.
- Vehicle detection or call button stopped working at the same time. This is often the intercom board’s power supply failing. The keypad survives, but all auxiliary functions on that board go dark together.
- Buttons feel soft or stick. Sun exposure breaks down the keypad’s UV coating, and once the membrane cracks, water gets in behind the face. The board is usually next.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we charge in the Austin area for Elite keypad and intercom work, installed:
- Standalone Elite-compatible keypad replacement: $185 – $265
- Elite intercom microphone/speaker repair: $160 – $220
- Full intercom module replacement (digital or analog): $240 – $410
- Diagnostic call with no further work needed: $89, deducted from the repair total if you proceed
These ranges cover parts and labor to remove the old unit, wire in the new one, program the codes, and test the full loop from keypad to gate response. If you need a cellular or phone-line intercom integrated, it runs slightly higher because of the extra configuration. None of the numbers above are vague guestimates; every job gets a written price before we touch anything, and you sign off on it. Every Elite repair we do is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise, which means if the repair fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s stated in writing on the invoice.

If your Elite keypad is sluggish, you can safely check the obvious: clean the face with a soft damp cloth, make sure the housing seal isn’t cracked, and look for ants or debris behind the unit. Do not pry open the keypad or intercom housing while the gate system is powered, and don’t run a multimeter across live relay terminals unless you’ve done it before. Gate operator control boards carry 12 – 24V DC, but the transformer on the other side is wired to line voltage. Nico Alvarez has seen more than one homeowner turn a $200 keypad swap into a fried control board by testing the wrong two pins. If the keypad has any voltage reading that isn’t on a labeled low-voltage terminal, step back and call us.
For most owners, the safest and fastest move is to call (903) 354-7419 and describe what the keypad or intercom is doing. Tell me what it’s doing wrong – I’ll tell you exactly what it costs to fix it. If we can fix it on the spot, we do. If it needs a part, we order it same-day and come back when it lands. No open-ended invoices, no guessing. We’re in and out in one trip the majority of the time.
FAQs
Three to eight years is normal in Central Texas, with weather-exposed units trending toward the shorter end. Units installed inside a shaded gate column or covered entry way often outlast the ones that face full west sun all afternoon. The EL-Keypad face membrane and intercom speaker gaskets are the first things to surrender to heat and UV.
Sometimes. If the failure is a cracked membrane, a stuck button, or a corroded terminal block, we can often repair it for $100 – $160 instead of swapping the whole unit. If the circuit board itself is shorted or the ribbon connector is burned, replacement is the honest answer. We’ll show you what we found before you spend a dollar on parts.
Most keypad replacements and intercom repairs are done in 45 to 90 minutes. If we need to run new control wire back to the operator, add another 30 to 60 minutes. Call (903) 354-7419 the day before if you can, and we’ll tell you whether we can knock it out same-day.
Yes, we keep Elite-compatible keypads and intercom modules on most trucks, along with parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, Ghost Controls, and other opener brands we service. If your exact Elite board revision isn’t on the truck, we order it same-day and usually install within two business days, sooner if it’s available from a local distributor.
